Adria Gasol, UCLA walk-on and Pau’s and Marc’s brother, tweets about George Zimmerman

It’s been a rough few years for the storied UCLA men’s basketball program.

After a few seasons with issues on-and-off the floor it appeared to be heading in a better direction under the new leadership of Steve Alford. But his tenure in Westwood didn’t get off on the right foot. The Bruins have had problems with several scholarship players over the years — Shabazz Muhammad, Reeves Nelson, Josh Smith just to name a few. The last thing they needed was for a walk-on to make the program look bad.

And that’s exactly what happened on Tuesday, as former CBT scribe and current Sporting News Associate Social Media Editor Troy Machir came across some questionable tweets.

Adria Gasol, a UCLA freshman center and younger brother of All-Star centers Pau and Marc, tweeted about George Zimmerman on Tuesday night … three days after the verdict.

The youngest Gasol has close to 8,900 followers, combine that with a sensitive subject, and you can imagine Gasol got negative feedback to his tweets. He later tweeted a link to a Reddit thread, and finally appeared to back off the initial tweet, in a response to a follower’s disagreement:

he killed, it was wrong. I don’t think he did it out of malice and maybe out of self defense. Nothing is right or wrong.

For what it’s worth, Gasol, who became a walk-on in August, didn’t play in a single game, and is currently not listed on the UCLA roster. So maybe Alford won’t have to worry about Gasol’s unpredictable tweets this winter. I’m sure he’ll have enough to deal with.

There is not a single thing wrong with Gasol’s tweet.

Well it’s simple really… If your not black, whining about racism, or wanting someone killed for being found innocent, your considered wrong! Where were all these trolls whining about Hernandez murdering a black male? Oh, Hernandez looked black so that was ok.

    Agreed

But it’s okay for the black athletes to tweet a bunch of hate filled junk? Double standard someday has to become extinct.

I saw plenty of Racist Blacks threating to kill Zimmerman on their sick A** rants…good for you Gasol

Has anyone ever thought of the fact that Adria Gasol was using SARCASM in expressing his feelings/opinion on the Zimmerman case? And that he’s actually anti-prejudice and just emphasizing the value of Trayvon Martin’s life?

Perhaps not. Because people prefer to misinterpret tweets and blowing things out of proportion.

    Can he be sued?

Have you ever heard of the First Amendment?

      • Charles L. Freeman - Jul 17, 2013 at 8:48 AM

Have you? If you had, you’d know that the First Amendment is about the federal government limiting speech.

Hope he isn’t planning any trips to Compton soon…..

Zimmerman AND OJ Simpson did nothing wrong. The fact is who the F is Adria Gasol anyways?

  9. rjyoung317 - Jul 18, 2013 at 1:46 AM

This world is screwed. NBC you are going to pay out the nose for this case. Keep it up. The facts are with Gasol and Zimmerman . It is truly amazing that someone can send some benign tweets siding with a court proven innocent man and that is deemed controversial and newsworthy. If you can’t see why Zimmerman is not guilty and why Gasol has every right to share his opinion than I feel sorry for you.

Love this country, bizarroworld. Gasol is probably wondering what the eff country he stepped into.
