North Carolina State brought a legend back into the program on Monday afternoon, as head coach Mark Gottfried officially hired Dereck Whittenburg as Senior Assistant to the Head Coach and Director of Player Development.

Whittenburg is a 26-year veteran of the coaching ranks, having bounced around the country as an assistant before becoming head coach at Wagner and Fordham. The last couple of seasons, Whittenburg has been an analyst for ESPN broadcasts.

“I’m very excited to return home to North Carolina State,” Whittenburg said.  “Coach Gottfried and I have a lot in common – we’ve played college basketball at a high level, we’ve both experienced winning a national championship and we’re both passionate about NC State.  I’m grateful for the opportunity to work with Coach Gottfried and his staff. I’m confident knowing that I will be contributing to his continued success.”

The name may not be all that familiar, but there’s little doubt that you know who Whittenburg is. Remember when Lorenzo Charles won the 1983 National Title for Jim Valvano’s Wolfpack by dunking home an airball? Whittenburg was the guy that shot the airball:

Will the curse of the Valvano finally be lifted? Has the tide finally turned?

Will State finally end the long wandering turmoil in the basketball desert after 25 years of self imposed exile?

Young punks that talk about “blue bloods” and the irrelevance of State’s athletics forget or never knew that once upon a time State was a greater basketball power than unc and Duke was the red-headed stepchild of the Triangle. So many basketball traditions originated at State from the origination of tournaments, cutting down the nets, player spotlight introductions, all thanks to Everett Case.

The ’74 team changed the game and knocked off the UCLA dynasty, and really should have been a repeat. After the ’83 Championship, that IS the Cinderella story that actually happened, State had 2 NCAA’s in the last decade. Duke had none and unc had 2, one from ’82, but you had to go back 25 years for the other in ’57 I believe? It wasn’t until Duke went on a roll that unc had to start claiming that fake championship in the ’20’s to stay ahead of Duke.

Since unc doesn’t mind fake classes you certainly don’t think they wouldn’t claim fake championships from the ’20’s? And nothing has changed since then! Heck the football team claimed a fake divisional championship last year that they weren’t allowed to claim due to NCAA sanctions. Didn’t stop them from handing out rings, shirts, and posting billboards about it. Shame, shame, shame….

Basketball in the State of North Carolina is better on the whole when State, Duke and unc all are nationally relevent. Seems that maybe State is finally on the right course. Now if we could just do something about Wake Forest…
