Report: Former North Carolina guard Will Graves arrested on drug charges at home owned by head coach Roy Williams

On Friday it was reported that former North Carolina guard Will Graves was arrested at his home on charges of possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia. What adds intrigue to the story is the fact that Graves reportedly lives in a home he rents from North Carolina head coach Roy Williams, according to WTVD in Raleigh, N.C.

A UNC spokesperson says Will Graves was finishing his degree at UNC and working as a part-time video coordinator for the basketball team this semester.

UNC says Coach Williams rented the house to Graves, and Graves paid for it.

Roy Williams is aware of the arrest and is “disappointed about it”, according to UNC.  Graves has been in trouble before, being kicked off the team in 2010 for violating team rules.

One could have a lengthy discussion about the laws as they pertain to marijuana, and that’s likely to happen in some circles. But for a program that went through the P.J. Hairston/Haydn “Fats” Thomas situation (both he and Leslie McDonald remain sidelined due to an ongoing NCAA investigation) during the spring, this is another headline North Carolina didn’t need.

Difficult to see this having any impact on the Tar Heels’ preparations for No. 11 Kentucky, but it’s another line of questioning that the head coach will likely have to deal with at some point.

Once again where is the NCAA?

  4. lundy337 - Dec 13, 2013 at 4:37 PM

It’s not the weed. It is the house. Same as with PJ and the rental cars.

  5. lundy337 - Dec 13, 2013 at 4:45 PM

House is appraised for well over $600,000. What is the rent on this and how does a “student” afford that legally…

  6. lundy337 - Dec 13, 2013 at 5:03 PM

Here’s another good one for you…… Who else has been “renting” the house?

  7. lundy337 - Dec 13, 2013 at 5:04 PM

Add this to the illegal benefits prong…

Or calls the reporters out on bias. There is always a workaround.

Not you in particular Raphi. I was mainly referring to Rob. Is he crying in his baby blue shirt over all unc’s mess?

Roy Williams quote on giving gifts (or low rent) to former athletes:”We wanted a program that would positively represent the university and the integrity of our basketball program was always very important to me,” Williams said in a statement yesterday. “I am deeply saddened to say there was evidently a mistake. I did not know the rule that once you’re a student-athlete, you are a student-athlete until death.”

Is that quote from ol roy’s time at Kansas? Can’t claim he didn’t know.

Butch Davis hires a tutor who becomes a cash mule to give benefits to his players. Roy Williams gives direct benefits through low rent to his players. And dont tell me Graves was paying 3500$ a month in rent on a 600,000$ house on 18 dollars an hour.

Wow. The censoring here isn’t transparent at all: There’s about 10 posts above by the same guy, some of which are responding to comments that aren’t there anymore. If you’re going to do that, why have a comment section at all?

Even as a Terp, I take no pleasure in this. What….was he supposed to peer into the windows?

  15. secdominance - Dec 14, 2013 at 12:39 PM

Considering Graves doesn’t play anymore, why would this be an NCAA issue?

All I see is Williams trying to help a former player finish his degree

  16. lundy337 - Dec 14, 2013 at 3:22 PM

Pretty sure this is a backend loaded benefit.
Plus he is still a student not a graduate.

If there weren’t restrictions on this sort of thing then any program could guarantee cars, houses, etc. after a player’s career was over regardless of if they make it to the next level.
I’m pretty sure that is against the rules. See one of the quotes above where ol roy was caught doing this before at Kansas. Some gifts are allowed but not the $600,000 house kind of gifts….

Trust me ol roy isn’t trying to help the kid. Ol roy is trying to help his APR.

Has anybody heard what Graves majored in? 10 to 1 odds says it was AFAM. And we already know what a sham of a degree that is at unc!

  17. lundy337 - Dec 14, 2013 at 3:31 PM

ol roy continues to keep unc in negative press and drag the north carolina through the mud.

He can only claim ignorance for so long and if he really didn’t know of all the problems going on with his program, (PJ, fats, AFAM, Kupec/tami, etc.) and at unc then it is a major red flag.

It’s time for roy williams to step down. It has been for some time now.

Bring some respect back to unc.

This started over a meter reader calling police about a broken window. When the cops got there they claimed that they could smell marijuana. They then asked for permission to search the house. The idiot allowed the police access to the home without a warrant. What an idiot. Make the cops get that warrant. Never allow them to search without one. The police found three roach’s and 4.4 grams of pot. The second charge is for a pot grinder. The idiot allowed them a free search without a warrant. He’s trying to earn a college degree? The courses at N.Carolina must be really easy for a moron like this to earn a degree.
