34-0.

No. 2 Wichita State did it.

They won all 13 games in non-conference play, then won all 18 games in the Missouri Valley, and then won three more at Arch Madness in Saint Louis, taking home the MVC tournament title and becoming the first team since UNLV in 1991 to enter the NCAA tournament undefeated.

Win No. 34 came against a scrappy Indiana State team that was good enough to notch a victory at Notre Dame earlier this season. The Sycamores were down by 15 points early in the second half, but they trimmed it to as close as four at one point down the stretch, but MVC Player of the Year Fred Van Vleet and Tekele Cotton were just too much, hitting run-quelling jumper after run-quelling jumper every time it seemed like Greg Lansing’s club was ready to make a push.

The 83-69 win means that the Shockers will be undefeated on Selection Sunday.

RELATED: Regardless of your opinion, appreciate the run Wichita State is making.

And that undefeated record will guarantee them a No. 1 seed when the brackets are released exactly one week from this moment.

We can argue the merits of that No. 1 seed if you like, and my guess would be that at least half of Wichita State’s ample and passionate fan base would understand, and agree, with their detractors. The fact of the matter is that the Shockers have not played all that tough of a schedule. They beat Texas, who likely won’t make it out of the first weekend. They beat BYU and Tennessee, two teams that might not even get make it onto the right side of the bubble. The win at Alabama looked better on their schedule in November than it does on their resume in March.

And while they stormed their way through the Valley, I would be remiss if I didn’t mention the fact that this season just so happened to coincide with Creighton leaving the conference and the rest of the perennial contenders being down.

All of that is a fair critique.

But none of it is going to matter in a week.

Because ’0′ is a massive number. An undefeated record on Selection Sunday is something that we haven’t seen in 23 years, or the lifespan of a typical college senior, even one that redshirted a season. I’m not simply saying it should get Wichita State a No. 1 seed.

I’m telling you that it will.

Because what we haven’t mentioned yet is that the Shockers made the Final Four a season ago. That will lend some credibility and validity to this season’s record, even though it’s not supposed to. The people that fill out the bracket? The Selection Committee? They’re humans. They’re not machines. So when they look at Wichita State and they look at that undefeated record, it’s impossible not to think about what Gregg Marshall’s club accomplished a season ago.

That’s just the way it is.

The Shockers are going to be a No. 1 seed.

And they’re going to make a run at becoming college basketball’s first undefeated team since 1976.

Who cares about this group of inbreds. Play somebody and maybe I’ll respect what this team does.

Exactly, beating the schools of the blind and deaf is nothing to be rewarded for.

Join a real conference…I guarantee that they get crushed in the 1st round.

REMARKABLE all those high school teams they beat!

Heck – they even beat a whopping SIX teams ranked in the Top 100! They even beat one team in the Top 50 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    W O W !!!!!!!!!!

Its not in the NCAA regulations, but let me introduce you to the “Boston College Rule”:
“A champion wins the games they are supposed to win.”

ALL THESE TEAMS have lost to an unranked team this year.
    Syracuse
    Arizona
    Kansas
    Virginia
    Villanova
    Michigan State
    Wisconsin
    Iowa State
ACTUALLY, I think Florida is the only other Div 1 team that has not lost to an unranked team this year!

Champion note: Wichita State was down 19 points with 11:58 left AT Missouri State, and won.
(that’s 19-10 Missouri State who is 3rd in the Missouri Valley, and defeated their only SEC opponent in the preseason).

    • rightvoted - Mar 9, 2014 at 9:52 PM

ALL THOSE TEAMS actually played ranked opponents, not high school girls junior varsity teams.

“shockertalk”, ignore the haters, congratulations on an incredible season. What all the haters seem to forget is that your team made it to the Final Four LAST YEAR, and if I’m not mistaken returned just about everyone from that team.

Side note to all you haters: anyone know who Wichita State beat to get to last year’s Final Four? OHIO STATE. And I’m guessing the Buckeyes didn’t send their girls JV team in to play that game.

They made the final 4 last year….

  7. witchrunner - Mar 10, 2014 at 12:36 AM

The fact is that they played 34 games and they are undefeated. No other team has done that. If you are going to play the game of schedule, then you have to rule out all teams that have lost to obviously lesser teams. Doing that, the only team standing is still Wichita State. The thing that some of these so-called experts fail to recognize is that, it’s not how you are supposed to match up against teams you don’t play, it’s how you played against teams you did play. And the fact is that Wichita State is the only team that played the winning way against every team they played. So, that gets them into the tourney as a no. 1 seed. Now, it’s up to someone else to prove that they shouldn’t have gotten there. So far, 34 teams haven’t proven that they don’t belong there. Will someone prove that they shouldn’t have gotten there? Obviously, someone may. But, then again, there may be three other team that will prove that the other three number one teams shouldn’t have been there either. As they say, that’s why they play the games.

Don’t get in this Shockers way or it will seriously mow you down. (Do a Google) – wooo-shock-locomotive

To disrespect the Shockers because they play in the Missouri Valley conference is just plain stupid. They led Lousiville by double digits last year in the final four with 4 minutes left in the game and if it hadn’t been for some questionable calls by the officials the outcome would have been different. The Shocks are returning 11 players from that team last year. To disrespect them would be like saying if the Alabama football team played in the Mountain West conference and ran the table they aren’t really that good. No one knows how good this team really is, they have virtually no weakness and probably have the best team chemistry in the NCAA something no team should overlook. I gaurantee you NO ONE wants to see WSU on thier schedule when the tournament starts.
