Tom Crean on twitter: ‘No need to reply. I don’t read it.’

It has not been a good week for Indiana basketball.

They weren’t even in contention to receive an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament. Then they got snubbed by the NIT and turned down the CBI, a move that made headlines thanks to a memorable quote from their athletic director Fred Glass.

Then on Monday afternoon, head coach took to twitter to talk about the way the season ended, sending out this tweet:

Over the next few days and weeks we will tweet out our thoughts on the season and our off season. No need to reply. I don’t read it.

I doubt that it was Crean’s intent, but that tweet just doesn’t read well. The point of social media is the immediacy of interaction. It’s the reach. When it comes to celebrities and public figures, it’s the idea that every single Indiana fan can, theoretically, be one tweet away from communicating with the head coach at Indiana.

Now, there’s nothing wrong with Crean ignoring his mentions. If you’re in the public’s eye, you’re probably better off not reading what the trolls are spewing. And while I know tone can get lost on twitter, the way that the tweet reads is just ... bad.

I wasn’t alone in that interpretation, either. A source close to one potential McDonald’s All-American said Crean came off as socially awkward and “arrogant”.

It seems like he realized how the tweet sounded, because just nine minutes later, he sent out the following:

I recieve a lot of good advice through the years and some is really good. I love the passion of the fans. I just don’t read my twitter.
