Alex Poythress is returning to Kentucky for his junior year

Alex Poythress will be returning to Kentucky for his junior season, the school announced on Wednesday afternoon.

“Playing in the NBA has always been a dream of mine, but I want to make sure that I’m NBA-ready before I make that jump,” Poythress said. “By coming back, I’ll be so much closer to earning my degree in business and it will give me another year to prepare my game and my body for the next level.”

MOREThe list of players entering the 2014 NBA Draft

Poythress averaged 5.9 points and 4.5 rebounds as a sophomore, and while he showed flashes of being the kind of electrifying talent that he was expected to be entering the program — particularly during Kentucky’s run to the national title game — Poythress was known more for his inconsistency than anything else this season.

That’s why it was a smart decision for Poythress to return to school. He has all the athleticism that he needs, but he’s still a tweener with a reputation that’s less than flattering.

Kentucky fans are now waiting on just three players to announce their professional intentions: Dakari Johnson and the Harrison twins. As we’ve written time and again here, the key for Kentucky next season is going to be whether or not the Harrisons return to school. If they’re gone, back court depth will be a real issue.
