Duke head coach Mike Krzyzewski will be busy for the next few months. He’ll be coaching USA Basketball in the 2014 FIBA World Cup in Spain. He then transitions into returning to Durham, where he is fielding a preseason top-3 team.
Coach K, 67, intends on keeping his schedule that way through 2016, he said in an interview with Yahoo Sports NBA writer Marc J. Spears.
“I’m going to coach USA, and this is true, through Rio [in the 2016 Olympics]. I might coach in college longer,” Coach K told Spears. “Probably. I do not see an end of my road in my college coaching. Also, Jerry will stop being the head of USA Basketball at that time [after the 2016 Olympics]. It’s an amazing honor, I’ve learned a lot and I really like working with Jerry.”
Back in March, Coach K made similar statements, saying he plans on coaching for at least five more years. In the Q-and-A with Spears, Coach K shrugged off any concerns of problems he had late in last season. Back in early March, he was sent to the hospital after dealing with lightheadedness and dizziness during a road game against Wake Forest.
Louisville head coach Rick Pitino, who is six years younger than Krzyzewski, said last summer, “I think where most coaches realize it’s their time is when they just get tired of recruiting.”
Coach K is continuing to land the five-star recruits, bringing arguably the best recruiting class this fall. His Class of 2015 already features top-20 recruit Luke Kennard, and this past weekend at the adidas Super 64, he and his whole staff sat in to watch No. 8 overall prospect, Chase Jeter. Duke is the favorite for the 6-foot-10 center.
Training camp began this week for USA Basketball, which begins August 30. The Hall of Famer enters his 34th season at Duke with 983 wins, most of any Division I men’s head coach.
