Injury to sideline Miami sophomore guard for 4-6 months

Despite the addition of transfers Angel Rodriguez and Sheldon McClellan and freshmen JaQuan Newton, James Palmer and DeAndre Burnett (who redshirted last season), Miami sophomore guard Davon Reed was expected to be a key member of the perimeter rotation for Jim Larrañaga in 2014-15. The reason why is Reed’s versatility, with his ability to play multiple positions on the perimeter helping the Hurricanes in the depth department.

Unfortunately for Miami they’re going to be without Reed for quite some time, as it was reported by the Associated Press that he’s expected to miss anywhere from four to six months with what the school defined as a “left lower extremity” injury. According to the story Reed suffered the injury during a workout last week.

As a freshman Reed averaged 6.6 points per game, and in the Hurricanes’ four games in Spain last month he accounted for 7.8 points and 4.8 rebounds per contest.

As noted above the Hurricanes have options on the perimeter, something that wasn’t necessarily the case in 2013-14 with Miami having lost most of its rotation from the senior-laden team that won the ACC in 2013. But to lose a player like Reed, who can be plugged into multiple spots on the perimeter, does hurt a team hoping to make a move up the ACC standings in 2014-15.

Miami’s top scorers in Spain were all newcomers, with McClellan averaging 20 points per game and Burnett (14.3 ppg), Newton (13.5) and Palmer (11.5) also in double digits. Rodriguez didn’t play during the trip due to injury.
