Kansas basketball players need all the help they can get the next two weeks as they go through Bill Self’s annual two-week Boot Camp.

For the next two weeks, the Jayhawks will go through one of the most rigorous training regimens in college basketball as they begin each weekday at 6 a.m.

Gary Bedore of KU Sports broke down what goes on in the Boot Camp.

Inside of Allen Fieldhouse, the players run an hour’s worth of sprints, backboard touches, defensive drills and slides. No basketballs will be used.

Former Jayhawk Keith Langford described the Boot Camp as this: “It’s almost like being in a torture device from Jigsaw from one of the ‘Saw’ movies,” Langford said.

In other words, these workouts don’t sound pleasant.

But Self told Bedore that this Boot Camp is a good team-building experience and should help the Jayhawks grow tougher as the season approaches.

“Same as always, get our guys in the best condition as possible,” Self said to Bedore. “Get them to be a little more responsible, tougher and rely on each other, become a closer team.

“You accomplish some toughness things together, some things we draw from every year in February, March. It gives us an air of toughness we can get through things, and it’s a great method of teaching defensive slides and things like that.”

I wonder if we’ll get any horror stories from this year’s Jayhawks about the Boot Camp? Former players sound grateful that they no longer have to participate but it should be beneficial to them this season.
