NCAA adopts new rules philosophy regarding student-athlete support

On Monday, the NCAA announced something that they’ve been working on for months: a new philosophy on how NCAA rules should be interpreted at the campus level. The goal is to create a level of common sense when applying some of the rules that the NCAA has in place, allowing schools to be more lenient and supportive in certain aspects of a student-athlete’s life.

“It is impossible to foresee every possible situation during the membership-led rules-making process,” said Kevin Lennon, NCAA vice president of academic and membership affairs, in a statement. “We recognize that some situations are simply outside the intended scope of the rules, and campus administrators are closer to the situation and should have the discretion to determine whether the spirit of the rules applies.”

Essentially, what the NCAA is trying to do here is eliminate the embarrassment that comes with the applying rules where common sense will tell you it’s dumb. It’s not a good look for the NCAA to do things like initially rule a former marine ineligible for playing in a military only football league.
