Providence has spent large portions of the past two seasons without former McDonald’s All-American and point guard Kris Dunn.

The 6-foot-3 guard has had some bad luck with right shoulder injuries as he missed nine games during his freshman year and only played four games during the 2013-14 season with an injury to the same shoulder.

But according to ESPN‘s Jeff Goodman, Dunn has been cleared for full contact as the guard takes the next step in his recovery.

Goodman watched Dunn and Providence go through a team workout on Wednesday and Dunn told Goodman that he was at about 80 percent right now.

“Physically, it felt great,” Dunn said to Goodman on Wednesday. “I’m just glad to be back on the court.”

This is big news for Providence and head coach Ed Cooley. The Friars made a surprise run to the 2014 Big East Tournament title and made the 2014 NCAA Tournament, but Bryce Cotton is gone and the only returning mainstays from that group are LaDontae Henton and Tyler Harris.

Dunn will have to help seven newcomers learn their roles as one of the team leaders and the team’s likely starting point guard.
