Charles Mitchell was one of a handful of Terrapins to leave the Maryland program following the 2013-2014 season. Unlike his former teammates, Mitchell will be eligible to play this season after being granted a waiver, according to a report on Friday afternoon from Andy Katz of ESPN. Georgia Tech made the official announcement on Tuesday.

“We are thankful that the NCAA has supported and granted Charles’ waiver for immediate eligibility,” Georgia Tech head coach Brian Gregory said in a statement. “Coming back home to Atlanta will give him the opportunity to assist his family while achieving some tremendous academic and athletic goals.”

The 6-foot-8 Mitchell was given his release from Maryland in late May. The Marietta, Georgia native landed in-state several weeks later, forming a rare college basketball trade as former Georgia Tech forward Robert Carter Jr. had transferred to Maryland six days prior.

Mitchell joins a four-man incoming class, which includes three-star big men Ben Lammers and Abdoulaye Gueye. Four-star shooting guard Tadric Jackson headlines the class. Ole Miss transfer Demarco Cox also enrolled at Georgia Tech this fall, and is immediately eligible under the graduate transfer rule.

The addition of Mitchell -- along with the 6-foot-8 Cox -- provides added experience to what would have been an undersized frontline. With the loss of Carter, Daniel Miller and Kammeon Holsey, the Yellow Jackets were without their top three rebounders from a season ago.

Mitchell averaged 6.5 points and 6.3 rebounds in 18.8 minutes per game as a sophomore at Maryland. He will have two years of eligibility remaining.
