Pitt and head coach Jamie Dixon lost the commitment of a top-50 player on Friday as Class of 2016 wing Maverick Rowan decommitted and re-opened his recruitment.

The news of Rowan’s decommitment was first reported by Matt Steinbrink of the Pittsburgh Rivals site.

The 6-foot-5 Rowan is the No. 46 overall player in the Class of 2016, according to Rivals, and Maverick had a strong spring and summer on the grassroots circuit.

Playing with Ohio Basketball Club, Rowan averaged 18 points and 5.1 rebounds per game in 16 adidas Gauntlet games. Rowan also shot 52 percent from the field, 46 percent from three-point range and 84 percent from the free-throw line.

Pitt still owns a 2016 commitment from No. 25 overall prospect Mustapha Heron, a 6-foot-4 guard.

In August, Rowan and his family moved from Midland, PA to Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. Rowan won a class A state championship for Lincoln Park Charter last season but the family moved to Florida in-part so Maverick could play tougher competition at Cardinal Gibbons, which is a 5A school in Florida.

This is a tough loss for Pitt, as the Panthers had a nice foundation to build on in the 2016 class with Heron and Rowan on the perimeter.
