UCLA’s Steve Alford receives one-year contract extension

Steve Alford’s debut season at UCLA was a good one, as his Bruins won the Pac-12 tournament title and reached the Sweet 16. As a result of that success, Alford’s been rewarded with a one-year contract extension through the 2020-21 season.

Among the achievements listed in the release announcing the extension were UCLA’s three first-round draft picks in June (Jordan Adams, Kyle Anderson and Zach LaVine) and a top ten recruiting class led by five-star forward Kevon Looney. As a result of the loss of those three draft picks (and forwards David and Travis Wear), UCLA has some holes to fill as they begin practice for the 2014-15 season this weekend.

However there’s also some talented pieces to work with, as guards Norman Powell and Bryce Alford and forward Tony Parker lead the newcomers with Looney, Thomas Welsh and redshirt freshman Isaac Hamilton among the newcomers. Unfortunately for UCLA they won’t have Jonah Bolden this season, as the Australian was declared a partial qualifier by the NCAA last month.

UCLA finished the 2013-14 season with a 28-9 record, going 12-6 in Pac-12 play.
