Among the schools that held preseason events Friday night was UConn, whose men’s and women’s basketball programs both won national titles last spring. For Geno Auriermma it was his ninth national title, with Kevin Ollie winning his first in just his second season as a college head coach (the UConn men have now won four national titles). During the annual “First Night” event at Gampel Pavilion the national championship banners were unveiled, but that was just one of the highlights of the evening.

For the second consecutive year the teams held a joint scrimmage, with Team Geno winning by the final score of 38-37. Also of note: prior to the banner ceremony each of the basketball programs’ 13 national titles were brought out on to the floor, with a player from each of those teams bringing that particular championship season’s trophy out.

UConn greats Ray Allen, Sue Bird and Rebecca Lobo were honored during the event, with Allen being recognized for his inclusion in the “Huskies of Honor.” Allen was part of the inaugural class of inductees, which was inducted on February 5, 2007.

Above is a video of UConn’s behind the scenes look at all of the activities at Friday’s “First Night” event. Just as a heads up, the video is just over ten minutes long.
