Each Monday and Friday, College Basketball Talk’s Scott Phillips goes over some important news and notes in the world of college basketball recruiting. This week, Washington’s recruiting resurgence, Maryland gets guard insurance and talented 2016 guards starting to commit.

Washington lands two players on Monday

Lorenzo Romar pulled off a big move on Monday when the veteran head coach of Washington landed two commitments. The Huskies received commitments from two power forwards when 6-foot-8 forward Devenir Duruisseau and 6-foot-9 junior college forward Malik Dime pledged on Monday.

They join point guard David Crisp, two guard Dajounte Murray, small forward Matisse Thybulle and power forward Marquess Chriss in the 2015 class for Washington.

That’s a lot of bodies and a lot of firepower.

Chriss and Murray are both four-star players and Crisp, Dime and Thybulle all had multiple high-major suitors.

With the Huskies lacking big man depth this season, this new group should really give Romar a lot of bodies to work with off-the-bench next season and more competition for practice.

It also speaks to the work of Washington assistant coaches T.J. Otzelberger and Raphael Chillious. Romar brought in those two guys to land players and they’ve delivered with a lot of talent in one class.

Maryland gets insurance at guard

Although the focus of Maryland’s fanbase was centered on five-star big man Diamond Stone taking an official visit to campus over the weekend, head coach Mark Turgeon also had an official visit from junior college point guard Jaylen Brantley and landed a commitment from him on Monday.

Brantley spent his freshman season at Marshall before transferring to Odessa and should give Turgeon a steady presence handling the ball and running an offense. If Melo Trimble doesn’t work out with the ball primarily in his hands this season, Brantley can give Maryland a unique look and push Trimble to the wing in some cases as an off-guard.

The pairing of Brantley, a point guard and Stone, a post who needs touches, is also an interesting move by Turgeon. Brantley played with Nerlens Noel and Georges Niang in high school and has gotten the ball to high-powered big men before.

I’m sure Maryland would love to see Brantley deliver the ball to Stone in the near future. Wisconsin and UConn are the perceived favorites for Stone, but the Terrapins are putting in a good fight.

2016 guards beginning to commit

Monday also offered up commitments from two Rivals 150 Class of 2016 guards. Randall Broddie committing to Memphis and Kyle Guy pledging to Virginia are both important because they’re top-150 players, but could this be the start of a 2016 commitment season?

The 2016 class has been pretty quiet in terms of early commitments, but schools are going to start pressuring 2016 targets to commit as they begin to finish with 2015 recruiting efforts and move on to the next group.

Each recruitment and prospect is unique, but don’t be surprised if we start seeing some runs of 2016 commitments here shortly before some players begin the high school basketball season.
