With Kenny Chery entering his senior season and a rotation that’s light on perimeter players, Baylor’s worked hard to improve their perimeter depth in the Class of 2015. Entering Thursday three of the program’s four verbal commitments in the class came from perimeter players, and that number increased to four late Thursday.

Three-star combo guard Wendell Mitchell, who hails from Rockdale, Texas, announced that he would attend the Big 12 program, picking Baylor over SMU.

Mitchell joins guards Kobe Eubanks and Jake Lindsey and wing King McClure as perimeter players who have verbally committed to Scott Drew’s program, with junior college forward Joseph Acuil being the program’s other commitment in the class. The 6-foot-3 Mitchell was one of the best scoring guards in Texas last year, averaging 32.2 points, 8.2 rebounds and 4.6 assists per game according to MaxPreps.

Yet even with his historic junior season, Mitchell hadn’t received an offer from a high-major program until Baylor extended one in April.

Mitchell played his grassroots basketball for the Houston Defenders, and he was also invited to the NBPA Top 100 Camp in June. According to 247Sports.com, Mitchell has an official visit to Baylor scheduled for next weekend.
