Lauren Hill to raise awareness for DIPG with #Layup4Lauren challenge

You’ve probably heard about Lauren Hill by now.

She’s the women’s basketball player at Mount St. Joseph’s, a Division III school in Ohio, who is battling a fatal form of brain cancer called Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma (DIPG). There is no cure, and while she doesn’t have much time left, she is using it to try and ensure that there will be one.

Hill’s story has gotten a ton of publicity over the last couple of weeks, as her team petitioned the NCAA to allow them to move their first game of the season up two weeks. Hill, a freshman, just wanted to play in one game, and they were worried she wouldn’t make it until the start of the season. The game will be played at the Cintas Center, home to the Xavier Musketeers. Tickets sold out in under an hour.

Hill is using this publicity to try and launch a social media campaign to generate donations for The Cure Starts Now, a non-profit fighting to find a cure for DIPG:

It’s called Layup 4 Lauren. Since disease has caused Lauren to have to battles spells of dizziness and shoot with her left hand instead of her dominant right hand, the challenge goes like this: You spin in a circle five times and then try to make a layup with your non-dominant hand. If you make it, you pass it along. If you miss, you donate $10 to The Cure Starts Now (link here) ... and then pass it a long as well.

She’s nothing if not ambitious. Among the first people she challenged are LeBron James and Becky Hammon, the first woman to coach in the NBA.

If you are so inclined, you can donate right here.
