Michigan State announced on Monday that freshman guard Javon Bess will miss a month of action to have surgery to repair a broken right foot.

The 6-foot-5 Bess figured to challenge for early minutes on the wing during his first season in East Lansing, but the Ohio native will instead have surgery on Tuesday to repair the fifth metatarsal in his right foot.

As the Spartans look to figure out their rotation for the new season after losing so many key pieces from last season, this is a bit of a loss. I’m sure head coach Tom Izzo would have liked to have seen what Bess could have done in some early-season action against smaller-level opponents.

Coming out of high school, Bess was regarded as a three-star prospect, according to Rivals, and was considered the No. 119 overall player in the 2014 class. The Columbus native averaged 22 points per game during his senior season at Lincoln High School.

Bess should hopefully be healthy by the start of December, but he’ll have to acclimate quickly to Division I basketball if he hopes to see minutes during Big Ten play.
