GAME OF THE DAY: No. 2 Wisconsin 68, Georgetown 65

D’Vauntes Smith-Rivera led Georgetown with 29 points but it wasn’t enough for the Hoyas, who fell despite limiting Frank Kaminsky to six points on 1-for-8 shooting. The reasons why Wisconsin still found a way to win: Sam Dekker and Nigel Hayes combined to score 32 points, and reserves Bronson Koenig and Duje Dukan scored 18 of their combined 22 points in the second half. Next up for Wisconsin is Oklahoma, which took care of Butler in the other Battle 4 Atlantis semifinal.

IMPORTANT OUTCOMES

1. No. 5 North Carolina 78, No. 22 UCLA 56

After getting whipped on the glass by Butler on Wednesday, Roy Williams’ Tar Heels put forth a better effort in that department against UCLA. Marcus Paige scored 21 points to lead four North Carolina players in double figures, and the Tar Heels were also solid defensively. UCLA shot just 38.6% from the field, and they also committed a season-worst 23 turnovers.

2. No. 11 Kansas 76, Rhode Island 60

Bill Self’s Jayhawks were dared to knock down some perimeter shots early and they did just that, leading by as many as 19 points in their win over the Rams at the Orlando Classic. Perry Ellis scored 17 points and Wayne Selden Jr. added 12 for Kansas, who finished the game with four players scoring in double figures and a fifth (Cliff Alexander) adding nine points. E.C. Matthews managed to score 20 points for URI but he needed 18 shots from the field to do so.

3. Oklahoma 59, Butler 46

The Sooners weren’t as dependent upon the three-point shot Thursday, both in the number of attempts (17) and the fact that they made just two on the afternoon. But they were able to score in other ways, shooting 66.7% from two and limiting Butler to 23.7% shooting from the field. Among those Oklahoma managed to slow down were Kellen Dunham (17 points, but he shot 5-for-16 from the field) and Alex Barlow (three points on 1-for-7 shooting).

STARRED

1. Matt Carlino (Marquette)

Carlino scored 38 points (8-for-14 3PT) and the Golden Eagles needed each of those points as they held off Georgia Tech, 72-70.

2. Lanerryl Johnson (Cal-State Fullerton)

27 points (7-for-10 FG), four rebounds and two assists in the Titans’ 67-62 win over Wright State.

3. D’Vauntes Smith-Rivera (Georgetown)

29 points (11-for-18 FG), five rebounds and three assists in Georgetown’s 68-65 loss to No. 2 Wisconsin.

STRUGGLED

1. Isaac Hamilton (UCLA)

Hamilton shot 0-for-6 from the field and committed seven turnovers in the Bruins’ 78-56 loss to No. 5 North Carolina.

2. Teddy Okereafor (Rider)

Okereafor shot 1-for-11 from the field, scoring four points in the Broncs’ 77-45 loss to No. 20 Michigan State.

3. Alex Barlow and Kelan Martin (Butler)

After combining to score 34 points in the Bulldogs’ win over No. 5 North Carolina on Wednesday, Barlow and Martin combined for six points on 2-for-15 shooting in a 59-46 loss to Oklahoma.
