Malcolm Brogdon led the way with 18 points for No. 7 Virginia as they went into College Park and knocked off their old ACC nemesis, No. 21 Maryland, 76-65.

Justin Anderson added 16 points for the ‘Hoos, while Mike Tobey (14 points) and Marial Shayok (nine points, five boards, four assists) both played important minutes off the bench.

The win was about what you would expect from this Virginia team. They controlled the game for just about the entire 40 minutes, and while they never put a run on the Terps to put them away, there was never a point in the second half where it felt like Maryland was ready to climb back into it. That’s what Tony Bennett teams do. They’re a nightmare defensively and they control the pace offensively. Throw in the fact that the Terps were missing Dez Wells and Evan Smotrycz, and all-in-all it wasn’t a terrible performance.

But that’s not the biggest story coming out of this game.

Virginia has a pair of injuries of their own that they are now going to be forced to deal with.

Late in the first half, starting forward Darion Atkins took a nasty fall when he got his legs taken out from under him as he tried to block a shot. He landed squarely on his back and was clearly in a great amount of discomfort as he sat on the bench for the rest of the game.

“That was a bad fall on Darion’s part,” Bennett told reporters after the game. “He really got upended and hit hard. I don’t know [how bad it is]. He’s moving real slow. We’ll take him back, and I’m sure he’s not going to enjoy the bus ride.”

That wasn’t the only injury suffered by Virginia, as Anderson appeared to roll his left ankle in the second half. It took him a minute to get up off the floor, before spending the rest of the game sitting on the bench. According to Washington Post beat writer Mark Giannato, Anderson was walking around after the game without a boot on and the injury did not appear to be too serious.

Virginia better hope so.
