GAME OF THE NIGHT: UNLV 75, Portland 73 (OT)

The best game on Wednesday night was played in Las Vegas, with a Cody Doolin layup with four tenths of a second being the difference for the Runnin’ Rebels. Doolin also made the play that forced overtime, driving to the basket to find Dwayne Morgan for the game-tying layup just before time expired. Rashad Vaughn (seven rebounds) scored 25 points, Christian Wood 17 and Doolin 15 to lead the way offensively for UNLV, with Alec Wintering scoring a team-high 24 for the visiting Pilots.

IMPORTANT OUTCOMES

1. N.C. State 83, Tennessee 72

Donnie Tyndall’s Volunteers attempted to use full-court pressure and a matchup zone early to get the Wolfpack out of rhythm offensively, and the strategy didn’t work out too well. Why? Ralston Turner. Turner was a finisher of sorts in NC State’s press break, and by the end of the night he had a career-high 33 points on 9-for-18 shooting from the field. Turner hit eight three-pointer on the night, and Trevor Lacey added 20 points for the winners. Josh Richardson led Tennessee with 17 points, and Kevin Punter and Armani Moore added 14 apiece for the Volunteers.

2. Baylor 66, New Mexico State 55

The Aggies are missing a couple of players due to injury, I know that, but it may be about time to take a longer look at the Bears this season. They are now 9-1 on the year, their lone loss coming to Illinois, and big man Jonathan Motley looks like he has finally woken up. He’s averaging 19 points, eight boards and 2.5 blocks the last two games. Can this group sneak into the top five in the Big 12?

3. No. 25 Michigan State 66, Eastern Michigan 46

The Spartans beat a team that Michigan couldn’t, but that’s not what’s important coming out of this game. Branden Dawson’s wrist is. He took a nasty fall and did not return to the game. Michigan State has called it a sprained wrist.

STARRED

1. Amere May (Delaware State)

In the Hornets’ 72-64 win at St. Francis-Brooklyn, May scored 48 points on 16-for-25 shooting from the field and 10-for-10 shooting from the foul line.

2. Ralston Turner (NC State)

Turner scored a career-high 33 points, making eight three-pointers and shooting 9-for-18 from the field in the Wolfpack’s 83-72 win over Tennessee.

3. Marcel Mosley (Arkansas-Pine Bluff)

APB went into Houston on Wednesday night and knocked off the Cougars thanks to 33 points on 10-for-16 shooting from Mosley. The Golden Lions scored just 61 points.

STRUGGLED

1. Ryan Harrow and R.J. Hunter (Georgia State)

Old Dominion knocked off the Panthers on Wednesday night in large part due to the fact that they held Harrow and Hunter, GSU’s two star guards, to a combined 11-for-35 from the floor.

2. L.J. Rose (Houston)

Rose did not have a memorable start to his 2014-2015 season, as he went scoreless with six turnovers in a home loss for the Cougars to 1-8 Arkansas-Pine Bluff of the SWAC.

3. Brent Jones (St. Francis-Brooklyn)

Jones made just two of his 14 field goal attempts, scoring five points in the Terriers’ 72-64 loss to Delaware State. That being said, he did manage to tally nine assists and seven rebounds.
