GAME OF THE DAY: No. 17 Maryland 73, Oklahoma State 64

Who’s the biggest threat to Wisconsin in the Big Ten? With an 11-1 record the Terrapins are part of that conversation, with their latest win being their first true road win this season. Jake Layman scored 21 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to lead the way for Maryland, which is still playing without leading scorer Dez Wells (broken wrist). Point guard Melo Trimble has played well at the point, and overall Mark Turgeon’s team looks much-improved from a season ago. Le’Bryan Nash led the Cowboys with 17 points and nine rebounds.

IMPORTANT OUTCOMES

1. No. 6 Virginia 76, Harvard 27

This one was bad. Harvard shot 1-for-20 from the field and scored just eight points in the first half, and they struggled to slow down the Cavaliers on the other end as well. Malcolm Brogdon and Mike Tobey scored 15 apiece to lead the way for Virginia, and Tobey also grabbed ten rebounds. As a team Virginia shot 59.6% from the field and assisted on 21 of their 31 made field goals. Harvard, on the other hand, finished with just one assist and ten turnovers.

2. Georgia 65, Seton Hall 47

What looked to be a decent matchup on paper was anything but in Athens, as Mark Fox’s Bulldogs controlled the action on both ends of the floor. Kenny Gaines scored 15 points, Marcus Thornton 13 and J.J. Frazier added 11 rebounds and seven assists off the bench to lead the way for Georgia. Seton Hall shot 29.6% from the field, with Sterling Gibbs going 1-for-11 on the night.

3. Alabama 60, Appalachian State 59

After allowing their lead to slip away at Wichita State earlier this week, the Crimson Tide nearly suffered a home loss at the hands of Jim Fox’s Mountaineers Sunday night. But thanks in part to Michael Kessens, who accounted for 17 points, ten rebounds and three assists, Alabama was able to avoid a defeat that wouldn’t look good on their resume. Tommy Spagnuolo led the way for Appalachian State with 18 points and ten rebounds.

STARRED

1. Dwight Meikle (Hampton)

Meikle scored 28 points and grabbed 15 rebounds in the Pirates’ 75-66 win over Northern Arizona.

2. Jake Layman (Maryland)

21 points and 11 rebounds in the 17th-ranked Terrapins’ 73-64 win at Oklahoma State.

3. Adrian Diaz (FIU)

Diaz shot 13-for-14 from the field, scoring 29 points and grabbing eight rebounds in the Golden Panthers’ 82-69 loss at Hartford.

STRUGGLED

1. Harvard

This was a historically bad day for the Crimson, who made just one field goal in the first half and shot 16 percent from the field in their 76-27 loss at No. 6 Virginia.

2. Gary Payton II (Oregon State)

Payton was held scoreless in the Beavers’ 60-52 loss at Quinnipiac, missing all three of his field goal attempts and fouling out in 26 minutes of action.

2. Sterling Gibbs (Seton Hall)

Gibbs scored three points on 1-for-11 shooting in the Pirates’ 65-47 loss at Georgia.

NOTABLES

  • Less than a week after they blew out DePaul at home, Oregon State fell 60-52 at Quinnipiac. Zaid Hearst scored 24 points and was one of the players asked to slow down Oregon State’s Gary Payton II, who finished the game scoreless.
  • USC moved to 7-4 on the season with a 75-71 win at Boston College. Nice road win for Andy Enfield’s team, but BC needs to get Olivier Hanlan going offensively before they begin ACC play.
  • A Dyami Starks jumper with 1.3 seconds remaining gave Bryant a 48-46 win at Denver. Quite the change for the Pioneers, who lost to Colorado State 85-84 Friday night in what was one of the best games played this season when it comes to offensive efficiency.
  • Ryan Harrow scored 27 points and Georgia State got back on track with a 68-55 win over Southern Miss.
  • North Texas, which led by as many as 27 points, managed to hold off Creighton 62-58. Colin Voss scored 16 points and grabbed eight rebounds for the winners.
  • Army moved to 8-2 with a 72-69 overtime win over Maine, with Tanner Plomb scoring 20 points and grabbing 13 rebounds in the win.
  • Ferris State became the fourth Division II team to beat a Division I opponent this season, as they won 82-68 at Bowling Green.
  • Kris Brewer’s free throw with 2.9 seconds remaining gave Kent State a 53-52 win over North Dakota State in El Paso. The Golden Flashes will play host UTEP in the title game of the Sun Bowl Invitational Monday night.
  • Josh Hawkinson scored 25 points and grabbed 13 rebounds in Washington State’s 82-53 win over San Jose State.
