A difficult season was made worse for UMBC late this week as the school announced that leading scorer Wayne Sparrow would be out the rest of the season after being no longer eligible to play.

According to a report from Edward Lee of the Baltimore Sun, the 6-foot-3 Sparrow was unable to matriculate into a particular graduate school program for the spring semester. The new semester began on Monday, so Sparrow is no longer eligible to play. Sparrow was a graduate transfer from Richmond and graduated from the A-10 school with a degree in political science before becoming a Retriever this season.

Sparrow was averaging 13.8 points, 4.6 rebounds and 2.2 assists per game and started all 20 games for UMBC before being ruled ineligible. His name has already been removed from the team’s roster on the UMBC men’s basketball page.

The Retrievers have struggled to a 3-18 mark on the season and sit at 1-7 in the America East. The team also lost reigning America East Rookie of the Year Rodney Elliott to a torn labrum earlier this season, so things haven’t been going great for UMBC in 2014-15.
