Liberty announced that they have fired head coach Dale Layer after the Flames lost to UNC Asheville in the Big South tournament on Wednesday night. The announcement came just a matter of hours after the season came to an end.

The Flames were 8-24 this year and just 2-16 in the league.

Layer had spent six season as the head coach at Liberty, riding an incredible four-game run through the 2013 Big South tournament to earn the league’s automatic bid, but that was the one bright spot in a rough couple of seasons. Layer was 82-113 in his six years at the Lynchburg, Virginia, school.

Layer was the 2011 Coach of the Year in the Big South in his only season over .500, but the Flames lost five straight to close the regular season and were bounced in the opening round of the league tournament that year.
