College basketball award winners announced

Earlier on Friday, Wisconsin senior forward Frank Kaminsky was named the winner of the John R. Wooden Award. Not surprising, given that the All-American had also received the Naismith Trophy, Oscar Robertson Award and AP Player of the Year.

Kaminsky also won the Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Award for the nation’s top center.

UConn junior forward Breanna Stewart also received the Wooden Award, for college basketball’s best player. Stewart led the Huskies to their third straight national championship, being named Most Outstanding Player for the third time again.

The other winners were announced on Friday night.

Delon Wright of Utah was won the Bob Cousy Award over Tyus Jones (Duke), T.J. McConnell (Arizona), Kevin Pangos (Gonzaga) and Fred Van Vleet (Wichita State).

Ohio State freshman shooting guard D’Angleo Russell won the Jerry West Award over Ron Baker (Wichita State), Jerian Grant (Notre Dame) Tyler Haws (BYU) and Buddy Hield (Oklahoma).

Stanley Johnson of Arizona was given the Julius Ervin Award for top small forward. Justin Anderson (Virginia), Sam Dekker (Wisconsin), LaDontae Henton (Providence) and Justise Winslow (Duke).

Louisville forward Montrezl Harrell won the Karl Malone Award for top power forward Perry Ellis (Kansas), David Laury (Iona), Georges Niang (Iowa State) and Kyle Wiltjer (Gonzaga).

San Diego State head coach Steve Fisher was the recipient of the Wooden Legends of Coaches Award.
