With a talented recruiting class set to join the program this summer, Texas A&M has moved on to working on its 2016 recruiting class. Sunday night the Aggies reeled in their first commitment in that class, as four-star point guard J.J. Caldwell verbally committed to the SEC program according to Scout.com.

The 6-foot-1 Caldwell attends Cypress Woods HS in Cypress, Texas, and he’s playing his grassroots basketball for the Houston Defenders program. Through eight games in Under Armour Association play this spring Caldwell’s averaging 9.1 points and 6.9 assists per game for the Defenders.

With his decision to become an Aggie, Caldwell will join a backcourt rotation that won’t lack for options when he arrives on campus in 2016. Graduate student Anthony Collins and seniors Alex Caruso and Danuel House will be out of eligibility, but the Aggies will still have Alex Robinson and Avery Johnson Jr. as possible options at the point.

Add in Peyton Allen and incoming freshman Admon Gilder at the two, and head coach Billy Kennedy will have some talent to work with in 2016. The addition of Caldwell gives Texas A&M a player who’s considered to be one of the better distributors in the Class of 2016, and with the pending losses of Collins and Caruso that was an area of need for the Aggies.
