Fresh off of a trip to Las Vegas for the Floyd Mayweather-Manny Pacquiao fight, Louisville head coach Rick Pitino took a few minutes to chat with Jim Rome about, among other things, Billy Donovan’s jump to the NBA.

But Rick’s most interesting comments came at the end of the segment, when he was asked about his son, Richard, the current head coach at Minnesota, potentially getting a bigger and better job. The elder Pitino told Rome that Richard was “seriously considering” taking the job.

“But he called me up and said ‘You know, Dad, Alabama is a great job but I don’t deserve it,’” Rick said. “You know what, for a 32-year old, that’s about as proud as I can be as a dad. He was just so humble. He said, ‘I haven’t done enough to warrant any move, or even consider any move.’ He said, ‘we’ve got a tough rebuilding job here at Minnesota and I’m going to get it done.’”

The comments are even more intriguing when you consider that Richard’s name has come up regarding the head coaching position at Florida that was vacated when Donovan went to Oklahoma City.

Alabama and Anthony Grant parted ways earlier this spring. After chasing Wichita State head coach Gregg Marshall, the Tide hired former NBA head coach Avery Johnson.
