After averaging 16.3 points, 2.1 rebounds and 3.8 assists per game as a redshirt junior, guard Sterling Gibbs made the decision to leave Seton Hall with one season of eligibility remaining. And what has been one of the more interesting recruiting processes came to an end Saturday afternoon, Gibbs announced that he’ll play that final season at UConn.

Gibbs’ decision came just hours after he refuted a report that he had already committed to Kevin Ollie’s program. A couple weeks ago it was reported by 247Sports.com that Gibbs, who played his freshman season at Texas, would join the UConn program but those reports were refuted as well.

Gibbs, who visited UConn earlier this week, also visited Pittsburgh (where he older brother Ashton played) and Ohio State.

In Gibbs UConn adds an experienced guard who can both score and distribute the basketball, which is key given the departure of Ryan Boatright. The Huskies, who are looking to return to the NCAA tournament after missing out last season, do add a talented freshman guard in Jalen Adams. But under Ollie the Huskies have used multiple ball-handlers to attack teams offensively, so those two along with Rodney Purvis and versatile forward Daniel Hamilton give UConn multiple options to execute that strategy.

Gibbs is the second graduate student to join the UConn program this spring, with former Cornell power forward Shonn Miller being the other. Both will be key figures for the Huskies, and they join freshmen Adams and Steve Enoch as newcomers joining the program this summer.
