For new head coaches a part of the job is making the rounds around the community to spark added interest in their program. For new Arizona State head coach Bobby Hurley, this included the opportunity to throw out the first pitch at the Arizona Diamondbacks game Saturday evening.

Hurley didn’t toe the rubber, but he did make an accurate throw from just in front of the mound while dealing with a special distraction. Members of the 942 Crew (942 represents the number of seats in the student section), Arizona State’s student section, rolled the “Curtain of Distraction” out behind of home plate but that didn’t impact Hurley at all.

While Hurley does have some work to do with the Arizona State program, he’ll be working with a veteran group that returns the likes of Savon Goodman and Tra Holder and adds a highly regarded junior college transfer in former South Plains (Texas) JC guard Andre Spight. Hurley encountered a similar situation in his first season at Buffalo (2013-14), where he managed to win 19 games with MAC Player of the Year Javon McCrea leading the way.

Arizona State released its non-conference schedule earlier this week, and it includes games against Texas A&M, Kentucky, UNLV and an appearance in the Legends Classic in Brooklyn (LSU, Marquette and NC State are also in the event).
