Northwestern head coach Chris Collins has landed himself a contract extension.

The terms of the deal have not yet been made public, but Collins did say that he will remain with the Wildcats for the foreseeable future.

“It’s not ‘coach Cal’ money,” Collins told the Chicago Tribune. Kentucky’s head coach signed a new deal worth nearly $8 million-a-year, while his assistants make a total of $1.44 million annually. “But it’s in the ballpark of what guys in our league are making. I want to be at Northwestern and love what we’re doing. I just wanted to be treated fairly.”

Last year’s results were not all that much improved from what Northwestern was able to accomplish in Collins’ first season on campus, as the Wildcats went from 14-19 to 15-17. But the product on the court was better, particularly down the stretch, as they won five of their last seven regular season games. Earlier in the Big Ten season, Northwestern had a streak where they lost five consecutive heartbreakers, which started with an overtime loss at Michigan State and was capped by a buzzer-beating loss at Maryland where the Terps erased an 11-point deficit in the final 3:46.

With Tre Demps and Alex Olah returning, and young Midwestern talent like Vic Law and Bryant McIntosh on the roster, things are heading in the right direction in Evanston. Now it’s time for this team to prove they’ve learned how to win.
