The return of Chris Mullin to his alma mater has been well-received by the St. John’s fan base, with the 1985 national Player of the Year and three-time Haggerty Award winner (given to the best college player in the New York metropolitan area) looking to make his first head coaching job a successful one.

Wednesday afternoon Mullin, who was also a three-time Big East Player of the Year (sharing it in 1983-84 and 1984-85 with Georgetown’s Patrick Ewing), threw out the first pitch at Yankee Stadium before the Yankees took on the Kansas City Royals. Mullin did well on the mound, as he threw an accurate pitch to catcher Brian McCann.

Mullin’s task at St. John’s won’t be an easy one, as evidenced by the loss of a number of key contributors from last year’s NCAA tournament team and Rysheed Jordan’s academic issues. But with the help of associate head coach Barry Rohrssen and assistant Matt Abdelmassih, the hope is that Mullin can make the program a consistent participant in the NCAA tournament.
