Less than two months after leading Old Dominion to 27 wins and a run to the Postseason NIT semifinals, head coach Jeff Jones announced Friday that he’s been diagnosed with prostate cancer. Jones is scheduled to undergo surgery June 1 at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, and with the early detection he’s hopeful to be able to return to his coaching duties in short order.

“A check-up in late 2014 revealed an elevated PSA [Prostate-Specific Antigen] level,“ Jones said in the release. “I underwent follow-up tests during the season, and in April a biopsy confirmed the existence of prostate cancer.

“We feel fortunate to have caught this when we did,” Jones added. “I hope to return to my coaching duties soon, and I look forward to a busy summer of camps and recruiting.”

June, which is a dead period when it comes to recruiting away from campus, is a month in which many college programs host their own day (and in some cases overnight) camps. The first evaluation period of the summer doesn’t begin until July 8.
