Michael Porter Jr. is the No. 2 player in the class of 2017, according to Rivals, so it should come as no surprise that he’s as highly-sought after as any player in the country.

On Sunday night, during the Game 5 of the NBA Finals, Porter tweeted out that he had cut his college list, something that is fairly common in this day and age. The difference with Porter? He cut his list to 17 schools.

17!

I want to thank the schools who’ve been involved in my recruitment, these are the 17 I’m going to move forward with! pic.twitter.com/hWFKeSb1ud

I’ll admit, I got a laugh out of it. But there was a reason behind his decision. You see, as of 12:00 a.m. on Monday morning, college coaches were officially allowed to call prospects in the 2017 class, and Porter’s list was nothing more than an effort to try and limit just how much battery his phone would waste buzzing from coaches reaching out through the night and morning.

“Didn’t want to cut any of them so early,” Porter tweeted. “Just wanted to put something out there before 12 tonight.”

Porter should know how college basketball recruiting works. His father, Michael Sr., is an assistant for the Missouri women’s team, where his boss is his wife’s sister. The two oldest Porter children both play on the Missouri women’s team. After Porter Jr., there are still five more Porter children, all of whom play basketball and run the family’s shaved ice stand in Columbia, Missouri.
