Lat July 6-foot-9 power forward Brodricks Jones announced that he’d verbally committed to San Diego State, giving the Aztecs a forward who had the potential to develop into a solid contributor for Steve Fisher’s program down the line. Jones signed a National Letter of Intent during the early signing period in November, seemingly meaning that the Lawndale, California product would be headed south for his college career.

However things have changed, as Tuesday night reports surfaced that Jones has asked the program for a release from his NLI. According to the San Diego Union-Tribune, that request has yet to be granted by Fisher offered some words on the situation (he can comment since Jones has signed an NLI).

“I’m disappointed that someone who signed and committed in November now doesn’t want to come,” Fisher said Tuesday night. “But I’ve always been of the opinion that it’s critical there must be a passion to be some place or it won’t be what it should be. So if someone is having second thoughts, then I think we’re all better served if he doesn’t come to San Diego State.”

Fisher declined further comment while details are being finalized.

Also of note in the report is the fact that Jones’ father stated that the two “haven’t really sat down to talk about it yet,” saying that ultimately it’s Brodricks’ decision as to whether or not he attends San Diego State.

Losing Jones wouldn’t be a huge hit regard to the 2015-16 season, as San Diego State has multiple key front court contributors back from last season’s 27-win team. Winston Shepard III, Skylar Spencer and Angelo Chol are all seniors, with rising sophomore Malik Pope being a player who could potentially take a major leap forward and Zylan Cheatham available after taking a medical redshirt last season.

There’s also the possibility of 2016 commit Nolan Narain, a four-star 6-foot-10 forward, reclassifying to 2015. With those pieces the competition for minutes for Jones would have been fierce, yet things would have opened up in regards to minutes in 2016-17 due to the loss of the three seniors mentioned above.
