Nearly two months after trimming his list of schools to five, one of the top point guards in the Class of 2016 is ready to announce his college choice.

Alterique Gilbert, whose list consists of Connecticut, Illinois, Louisville, Syracuse and Texas, announced on social media Friday that he will make his college choice Saturday morning (July 4). The 6-foot floor general attends Miller Grove HS in Lithonia, Georgia, where he averaged 18.5 points, 4.7 rebounds, 6.2 assists and 5.3 steals per game as a junior.

Gilbert, who put together a good spring with the CP3 grassroots program on the Nike EYBL circuit, has taken just one official visit and that was to UConn. According to 247Sports.com, the Huskies are the favorites to land a commitment from Gilbert.

UConn will lose at least two perimeter players at the end of the 2015-16 season in Sterling Gibbs (graduate student by way of Seton Hall) and Omar Calhoun, with Rodney Purvis and Sam Cassell Jr. both being juniors. Sophomore Daniel Hamilton and freshman Jalen Adams are also key pieces in the perimeter rotation. Adding Gilbert to the mix would be a welcome boost for a program that under Kevin Ollie has been willing to play multiple players capable of initiating the offense at the same time.
