Report: Tennessee incoming freshman point guard still not enrolled

Tennessee and new head coach Rick Barnes desperately needed a point guard for the 2015-16 season, so the program quickly targeted reclassified point guard Lamonte Turner during the April evaluation period. The aggressive recruitment led to a commitment from Turner, but the incoming freshman lead guard has not enrolled at Tennessee yet and could be awaiting an academic matter, according to a report from Ben Frederickson of the Knoxville News-Sentinel.

A Tennessee spokesman confirmed to Frederickson that Turner is targeting an August enrollment instead of getting into campus this week as the school could be awaiting a final grade to post. Barnes also echoed similar sentiments at a summer league in late June.

“We are waiting for him to post this last grade that he has, and then we will make a decision from there, where he will be,” Barnes said to Frederikson in late June. “But we plan on him being here next week, unless something changes.”

Although it’s likely that Turner is able to enroll in August with no issues, the Volunteers certainly hoped that they could get their freshman point guard in the mix earlier so that he could have more time to work with teammates for the upcoming season. The 6-foot-2 Turner reclassified from the Class of 2016 this spring and became a hot target for programs looking for an immediate boost at guard. More of a scoring point guard, Turner should help the Vols in the point guard department, since they’ve been struggling to find natural options there the last few seasons.
