Syracuse legend Dwayne “Pearl” Washington will be undergoing surgery on a brain tumor this Thursday. It is a relapse of a tumor that Washington had surgery on 20 years ago.

According to a story in the Syracuse Post-Standard, Pearl’s a private man that would prefer to fight this battle on his own, out of the public eye. But given his status as one of the best and most popular players in the history of Syracuse basketball, word of Washington’s condition began to leak out.

A family friend spoke to the paper on Washington’s behalf, saying that the 51-year old is “relaxed” and “taking everything in stride” but that he’s “asking for prayers”.

Washington spent three seasons with the Orange, becoming an all-american as a junior before turning pro and getting picked 13th in the 1986 draft. He averaged 15.7 points and 6.7 assists in his three-year career.
