With Monte’ Morris being a junior and expected backup Nick Noskowiak leaving the program earlier this month, Iowa State had a need for a point guard in the 2016 recruiting class. Sunday night head coach Steve Prohm landed a player who can help in that regard, as Iowa Western CC point guard Donovan Jackson announced that he’s committed to the Big 12 program.

“I’m proud to announce that I will be attending Iowa State to play basketball,” Jackson said via Twitter. “Can’t wait to play in front [of] all those fans!”

The 6-foot-2 Milwaukee native made 20 starts at Iowa Western as a freshman, averaging 13.6 points and 2.3 assists per contest (Rico Thompson also played the point for Iowa Western) while also shooting 40 percent from beyond the arc. Jackson, who unofficially visited Iowa State earlier this month, also held offers from programs such as Creighton, Iowa, Memphis, Illinois, Wichita State and Ole Miss among many.

With Naz Long being a senior and Morris having the potential to turn pro after the 2015-16 season, the addition of Jackson is an important one for Iowa State. And given the number of seniors they’ll lose (Georges Niang, Jameel McKay and Abdel Nader in the front court) at the end of the upcoming campaign, Iowa State will have a lot of room for additions moving forward.

In addition to Jackson, Iowa State also has Arkansas transfer Nick Babb waiting in the wings on the perimeter. The younger brother of former Cyclone Chris Babb, Nick will have to sit out the 2015-16 season per NCAA transfer rules.
